Smalto table by Barber Osgerby for Knoll.
The sculptural Smalto table collection by Barber Osgerby was conceived through an approach to materiality, the contemporary graphic forms reinterpreting themes of classic designs. The choice of enamel-coated steel allowed for a design which would be durable, lightfast and waterproof. Enamel finishes can provide a depth of colour and a finish not often associated with large furniture items.
The duality of environmental conditions is also an asset, with indoor furniture rarely suited to outside.
The detailed design of the table was informed by the material, with generous radius to the top and large cylindrical legs. Whilst robust, the vulnerability of enamel comes through chipping on corners and sharp edges.
“What’s interesting is that the material actually informed the shape of the table which is unusual, as with metal or wood you can make whatever shape you want.”
